What A Week!

Wow- what a difference a 4 hour nap stretch makes- for both me and the babies! Last night I got a good almost 4 hour sleep stretch leaving me feeling refreshed enough to get through the day with no naps AND the babies took a good almost 4 hour nap this afternoon which afforded me the luxury of getting caught up reading all the posts on blogs I read. Now, that doesn't mean I had time to comment on everyone's... but at least I know what's going on with everybody!

We left the hospital on Saturday, after 4 days. It was a good week to be stuck inside- all week long it had been dreary, rainy, foggy and melty. Now this week so far has been gorgeous: sunny and super warm for March in Wisconsin. While in the hospital my mom and mother in law both visited, as well as two co-workers and one friend.

Both babies in a hospital bassinet

Getting Samuel ready to go home from the hospital

Annabel was too small for a regular infant car seat, so she went home in a carseat bed

The first night was really hard- kind of like the first night with a new puppy. No one gets any sleep. We discovered that the babies weren't used to sleeping with no lights on, because they were in the nursery most of the night at the hospital. Since our mothers visited for three days before we were home I also think Sam and Anna got used to being held while sleeping and didn't really like the larger open space of the co-sleeper. I think I got two hours of sleep that first night. The next night was better, and last night was better still.

Overall, we've got a good routine of: sleep for 2-3 hours, diaper change, eat then repeat. Whoever wakes first gets the first diaper change and then when the changing pad is open we wake the second baby and start the process with that baby. Doing this for the past 3 days has really kept them on the same "schedule." I count my blessings that they pretty consistently sleep for around 3 hours at a time and they eat fairly well, although awfully slowly.

First baths. Sam wasn't a fan.

Anna liked her bath much better. Her umbilical cord fell off after only 5 days. Sam's is still on.

My favorite part of every day: snuggling a baby.

Double miracle blanket swaddling

We've discovered that both babies like our swing (except we need a super slow speed, so we end up just pushing it a little and letting it swing) and one of our bouncer chairs. So far we just rotate between those two. We haven't broken out our other swing or bouncer yet.

First matching outfit
(We don't really have many- My husband loves moose)

The weather has been so gorgeous, we went on our first walk around the block to celebrate being one week old !
Sam was on a roll today- he managed to pee on himself just about every time he was changed. My husband also got ceremonially peed on for the first time- Sam packed quite a punch: it went all over him, my husband, the changing pad, the wall and even on top of the diaper genie. I couldn't stop laughing even though it really hurt my incision!

I love reading about all your adventures. Plus Sam and Anna are so adorable. The only person I know that has twins did it just like you are - in fact they would wake up the other baby just to keep them on the same "schedule."

I know you mentioned you were going to try breastfeeding, I hope it is going well. It was the hardest thing I have ever done and just hope it is easier for you and/or you have found a system of feeding your miracles that works for you.

I am glad that things seem to be settling in pretty well for you! :)

I have a few questions for you... The bed that Anna used for home coming - was that provided by the hosp? Are you bathing them or just sponging - what did your ped rcommend? As far as the breastfeeding is concerned - do you tandem feed them and how is the supply working out - do you have to supplement?

I'm so happy you are home with your babies :) and it's nice to know there is a possibility of slightly more sleep after! I plan on working hard on a schedule too - you and I must have read the same books lol! And I want the same answers that BB wants lol!

So far I only got one bouncer and one swing. I don't want them to hate one or the other and me to have extra things I don't need :)

You look so beautiful - absolutely glowing! And Jake looks like such a proud papa :)

Can you believe Jenn is gonna be next?!

Sounds like things are going really well! We almost had to take Lexi home in a carseat bed too but our nurse made the carseat work somehow even though she left weighing less than 5 lbs. I'm amazed you made it out of the house! Good for you! I think it's so important to try to do things like that for your own sanity. It sounds like they are falling into a great routine. You're doing such an amazing job and you look beautiful!

I've never heard of a carseat bed! I wonder if my little boy will have to utilize one! Very interesting!

So glad the weather is all cleared up and you could get out and take a walk...sounds like you all are doing a great job!!!

I love this post! And the part about peeing is hilarious. Do you have any peepee teepees? We have 5... I'm hoping it will minimize the pee going everywhere. I was peed on by a baby boy when I was a teenager and I've never forgotten it! lol

Looks like you are all settling into a nice routine. Hope the babies continue to give you several stretches of sleep throughout the day and night. I love all the pictures and the matching outfits are precious. Did you have to buy the carseat bed, too, or did the hospital let you borrow it?

I've been following your blog for a bit now, esp since I am expecting twins mid-summer and also live in WI! (by the way, totally hoping for no snow this weekend!) Congrats on the twins! Glad to see you are getting a routine. By the way, what kind of stroller do you have?
