Roar!

My original plan was for Anna to wear a bear costume and dress our yellow lab as a lion (lions and tigers and bears, oh my!), but my coworker offered to let us use her lion costume and I couldn't justify buying a new costume when we could use one for free.  My little 2 1/2 year old girl is wearing an 18 month sized costume.  The legs were a little short, but otherwise it fit just fine.

We actually went trick or treating twice- well okay, three times if you count our church's trunk or treat which we did on Saturday for something fun to do.  Our town has trick or treating hours on the Sunday closest to Halloween to avoid trick or treating after dark.  A long time ago before we moved here a girl was abducted around this area during trick or treating in the dark, and it's been scheduled like that for daylight ever since.  However, for the second year in a row, Daddy was required to go on a work trip during trick or treating, so he was not able to go with us.  We went anyway with our our daycare provider's family, just for fun.  My orignal plan worked out anyway, because they were all dressed as bears.

Lions, Tigers, and Bears (times three), oh my!
(The best photo of the 5 kids, ages 5 and under)

Daddy got home from his work trip the morning of Halloween and so we went trick or treating again at the city I work in, because they have trick or treating on the actual date every year, so he could go with us for the first time.  Since Sam and Anna love going out and about, and judging from their excitement the first time, I knew they'd have a ball doing it again.

I'm Probably Jinxing Myself...

I can't help it, I just have to say it- although I am fully aware that putting this is writing will inevitably completely reverse all of it tomorrow and I'll think it was all in my imagination.

This will come across as a brag post, but all mamas are proud of their kids and everyone has a right to profess how proud they are of their children.  Someday, I want Sam and Anna to read the words I wrote about them growing up and know though my words that I was proud of them.

Simply put, I am really loving this age.  This 2 and a half stuff is awesome.  Sam and Anna are such fantastic kids, I am in awe daily at how well they interact with each other.  They know so much- it astounds me what they retain on a daily basis, especially when I have more than one student in my kindergarten class that knows less colors, less shapes, less numbers, letters, sounds, etc (the list goes on and on) than my two do... and the kids in my class are twice their age.   Their comprehension of stories we read is superior than more than a few kids in my class- I can read the same book in my classroom that I read to Sam and Anna for bedtime, and in my class I get a few blank stares and unrelated answers to questions that do not make sense, while at home Sam and Anna can answer my questions(the same ones!) appropriately.  Keep in mind that they are 2 and a half, and the kindergartners in my room are 5 and 6 years old. It seems like every day I am shocked at what they can do or know when I'm working so hard to get those 5 and 6 year olds to get it.  (For example, Sam was pointing out that I had 3 As on my shirt, and 2 Ms.  He said that big M's are for Mama, and little m is in his name.  Then he said- A is for Anna, but where's S?  Oh there it is... pointing in the correct location.  Or when my FIL was trying to stump Sam and Anna on shapes, and tried asking them to identify a octagon- you bet Sam told him that one too!  Ask them what planet they live on, and they can tell you Earth.  Ask them who the president is, and they say Obama. They can correctly identify their right from their left, etc.)

For the most part, both Sam and Anna listen really well and rarely test their boundaries anymore.  We've got a discipline system that works well for us, and I'm thrilled.  Sam and Anna respond wonderfully to choices and counting- a mere counting to 20 will hold off any impatience for toy sharing, or wanting to do something they can't right then (plus, they've gotten very good at counting to 20!).  It makes things so much easier when you don't have to exert your parental power in a power struggle all day long, and then we have more time for fun things!

I also love that we can take them just about anywhere and they will behave well.  I really cannot remember the last disgruntled child I had in a public place.  I think my children must be extroverts, because it seems like the busier we are, the more places we go, the better and happier they are.  They love going on "adventures" and often ask us, "What are we doing today?  Or "Where are we going?" I took them 7 different places on Saturday by myself, without a fuss.  But yet, they can play for hours at home too, together and on their own without needing much adult attention too.

I adore talking with them, having grand conversations about the world around them- seeing what they know and understand, what they are trying to make sense of, what they want to know more about.  Seeing the world through fresh eyes (like when I told them they were "cracking me up," and they touched my arm and said, "Crack crack!" because they had no idea the meaning behind my words and thought I was telling them they were literally cracking me!).

And how they are together is just icing on the cake.  They play together like pros (of course, they have had their whole lives to practice, haha!).  They say please and thank you to each other unprompted, kiss each other's bumps, help each other other, and selflessly give up their things for the other one most of the time.

This week, my husband went on one of his longest work trips since Sam and Anna were born, and may even possibly his longest work trip since they were born.  Regardless, it has been pretty easy this time around.  I keep flashing back to what it was like to solo parent 7 month olds when he went on his first work trip since they came into our lives- the waking during the night, the baby food feeding, the bathing, and all the other stuff that required toting two not mobile babies everywhere something needed to be done, including to daycare at 7 am.  Now, they go to the bathroom on their own, put their clothes and shoes off and on with minimal assistance, walk where ever we need to go, eat with no extra effort required that what I do for myself, and of course, sleep through the night...  I can see why people often have a second child when the first is 2!  This is so much easier than life with twins before the age of 2.

Mostly though, I just spent time each day feeling so blessed that these two wonderful children are mine and love me almost as much as I love them.

* of course, last night BOTH of them woke up once- Sam hit his head against the wall and woke up crying for a minute, and Anna woke up (I think she was cold) and needed to be recovered by her blanket before quickly falling back asleep.  Oh well, I still think my kids are fabulous!

*They are normal kids though, don't get me wrong- Sam likes to push Anna's buttons sometimes like a typical brother and she'll yell back at him.  Sam still gets up out of bed twice before falling asleep even though our rule is that they stay in bed.  Anna is a picky eater, which can be frustrating because she's the one who could use a little meat on her bones.  Still love 'em to the moon and back though!

Pumpkin carving

Not so sure about the pulp

The pumpkin on the top right was Daddy's attempt at freehanding a Thomas face, per Sam's request.

Hangers...?

The other night I was trying to fold a load of laundry while Sam and Anna were playing in the same room with me (a somewhat futile attempt).  Lately, they like taking the hangers from me while I'm in the middle of hanging stuff up.  That night, Anna was hanging them off of her shirt while prancing around the room and this was our exchange:

Anna: "I'm dressing up."
Me:  "Dressing up for what?"
Anna: "For Halloween."
Me: "As a hanger???"
Anna: "Yup."

Since I laughed at her comical creativity, Sam decided to join in (which is usually the case with the two of them- Anna does something funny as the comedian in our home and Sam wants the happy attention too so he copies to be funny like her.) and he thought our dog Bella should be dressed up as a hanger too.

They are just a little bit excited for Halloween, can you tell? We "practiced" trick or treating yesterday with their real costumes for Halloween (to practice saying trick or treat and thank you) and I couldn't get Anna to take her costume off afterward. It was entertaining to watch a lion play trains! Next time I'll have to take a picture of that, too.

What I Miss

This summer I had a grand time doing projects with my little ones.  I'm a teacher at heart not just through occupation, so it was right up my alley to have  mini preschool in our home this summer.  We had a blast doing activities for alphabet letters, from A to.... U.  That's right, U.  I had intended on finishing up the last letters after school started, because we couldn't quite cram in the last 5 letters with the first 21 in the time I was off from school.  But it just didn't happen.  Did you notice that my alphabet activity posts stopped after U?

A reality check made me realize quickly that not only did I not have time to collect ideas and prep projects for Sam and Anna while working over 40 hours a week, but we didn't have enough time to do any of them with our school days schedule.  They love having time when getting home from daycare to just play independently (or with each other) with all the toys they didn't have access to during the day.  Forcing them to do a structured activity with me instead would be just that- forcing them.  Since the main point of any project is having fun, forcing them would definitely be the opposite of my goal.  Plus, our new awesome daycare provider wanted to start doing letter activities with them, and I thought it would be just fine for them to start back at A, rather than pick up from where we left off. (Repeated exposure and all that.  I knew she'd do different things than when we did too.)

But I miss it.  I miss doing those project-y type things and creating with them.  There are so many fun fall-ish, halloweenie things that I would love to do with Sam and Anna. It's hard for me to be making apples, fall leaves, pumpkins, bats, spiders and skeletons with the kindergartners in my class but not have time to do something similar with my own children when I really want to.  I do give our daycare person ideas, and she does do some fun things with them.  However, it is about the process for me- the having fun together to create something, not just the end result to hang on my fridge.  I just don't know how to squeeze more time out of our daily life to do any of it.

Pumpkins, Pumpkins

Obligatory blog pumpkin post here!  We were determined to get to a pumpkin patch on the only non-rainy weekend this fall so far, despite traveling out of state during the first part of the weekend.

Sam and Anna loved running through the corn stalk tunnel over and over again.

There was a small petting area (anything to make extra cash, I guess) and so Sam and Anna both got to hold bunnies, feed various animals like ponies and llamas and even a camel.  Like usual, Sam preferred to enjoy most of the animals from afar, rather than up close.  On the reverse side, Anna stuck her face right into the pig's while he ate.

They attempted to use "teamwork" to lift this pumpkin on their own.

(Look!  I can carry this one myself, so we can get it, right?)
We settled for two small pumpkins instead, since we already have a bunch of pumpkins at home courtesy of my MIL's garden.

Another big hit was the mini-corn maze: just the right size for toddlers to confidently run around in it over and over again.

Sam was more interested in pushing chairs than posing with his Mama.

Amazed at the size of the pumpkin they were sitting on.

Life.

What a week.  What a weekend.  I had fully intended to get back on the blogging wagon with my short burst of a few posts a week or so ago.  Then life happened.  As in, new state mandated standardized testing for kindergarten in which I spent no less than 8 completely dedicated hours assessing my students this past week.  And I'm still not done.  Then a college friend of mine succumbed to the aggressive cancer she was first told about 6 short months ago.  She was 28 when she died- and one of the few truly wonderful women without a fault that I can identify in this world.  It's been a tough week.

We drove Friday night after work to our home state to attend the funeral on Saturday.  Luckily, my MIL lives 30 minutes from where it was, so we had a babysitter for the day.  Unluckily for us, but that looonggggg car ride meant that our still WON'T SLEEP IN THE CAR twosome fell asleep Friday night at 11:30 pm.  Slap-happy overtired toddlers can be entertaining, but stressful too.   (My favorite part was telling Anna to "hang on" in a gas station bathroom  and after grabbing the coat hook and dangling her feet, said "I hanging on!"  Also unluckily for us, but Anna forgot she was potty trained and peed in her car seat, with several hours to go to our destination.  Luckily for us, my MIL had a washer we could use when we arrived.  What's even more awesome than driving with two overtired toddlers for 6 hours and then doing laundry at midnight?  That it was all so we could attend the funeral of my 28 year old friend the next day.

We returned home on Saturday night because I was determined that we would a.) go to a pumpkin patch this year and the wet weather had prevented it so far plus my husband will be on a work trip next weekend so it was Sunday or never as a family this year. b.) have some good aspect of the weekend so it wouldn't completely blow and c.) rake our leaves because our leaf pickup for our area starts Monday and again, the wet weather had prevented it so far so it was now or never.

Anna had yet another accident in her car seat  with hours to go in our drive on the way back and so I waved my white flag, bought diapers at a gas station and told Sam and Anna that we now wear diapers for long car rides.  At least that meant we weren't stopping 5+ times for icky gas station bathroom breaks.  Sam and Anna went to sleep at 10:30 pm (so at least a little earlier than the night before) after again, NOT SLEEPING IN THE CAR ONE SECOND and the side effect meant they slept in the next morning until 8:30 am.  We salvaged our weekend with a perfectly fun time at the pumpkin patch Sunday morning, decent naps to catch up on their sleep deficit, ample time to get the millions of leaves in our yard to the curb, 8 loads of laundry, washing and changing sheets on three beds (and I thought changing the bedding on cribs was a pain), and pumpkin carving since Daddy's leaving town in a few days until Halloween morning.

Whew!

I have high hopes for a less stressful, less of a downer week.

Sam's book

Click here to view this photo book larger
  (personal info edited out)

So yeah, my children are 2 and a half and I just finished Sam's 1-2 year old photo book. Better late than never, right? My goal is to get Anna's done before Christmas. Then, next year I'm switching to doing one book a year for our family. So in the next book there will be an overlap of 3 months (all of 2012 in the book), but one book a year seems more manageable than doing two books every year! My goal for completing a 2012 family book? During my winter break- so before January 1st. Wish me luck in doing two massive photo books in the next 2 and a 1/2 months!

Ridiculously Cute

Yesterday Sam bumped his head and before I could do anything about it, Anna bent over and kissed it for him.  I just watched and let her do the comforting.  But the cuteness doesn't stop there.

Then when Anna attempted to kiss it again (because according to Sam, she missed the spot a little and he was directing her to where she should kiss), they ended up bumping heads together, so they then took turns kissing each other's heads, pointing out where the correct spot was to kiss.  But the cuteness doesn't even stop there.

After that, Sam said, "Let's do it again," and then they purposely bumped their heads together (gently) just so they could give each other "feel-better" kisses one more time.

Punctuated by a few "I love yous" and they went right back to playing together nicely, side by side.

Too. cute. for. words.

More Fall Fun

The weekend before we went camping was gorgeous and in the 70's, so we took advantage of the weather and went up a literal mountain to look at the fall colors.

The ski lifts were open for fall color viewing, and I felt brave enough to attempt it this year with two 2 year olds.  I am a little afraid of heights, so I had a death grip on Sam the whole way up and down, but we made it. :)  Apparently I didn't hide it very well from Sam and Anna though, because they are still talking about me being scared on the chair lift.  Whoops.

I may have been  a little scared uncomfortable, but Sam loved riding the chair lift.
Fear of heights aside, the fall colors were worth it!

Camping Weekend

Wow- an almost 2 week absence from blogging.  I don't know if I've ever gone that long without posting.  The day after my last post was my 33rd birthday.  Then we all got nasty colds.  It was a gorgeous weekend and any spare time we had was spent outside enjoying it.  Then, I worked very hard to finish Sam's 2 year old photo book (yeah, my duo is closer to 3 years old than 2, but better later than never!) because my code for a free 12 by 12 photo book was expiring.  The first year books were about 45 pages long, and the second year book ended up being 93 pages, so it took me a monumental effort to get it done!

Plus, we tried to fit in one last camping trip before handing back my parent's camper.  It was a lot colder last weekend (like 40's in the daytime and a low of 25 degrees F at night), but the heater in the camper made it just fine.  The cold weather gave us the opportunity to to try out Sam and Anna's new winter coats!  This was their 3rd camping trip.

Photos from our camping adventure:

(because it was so overcast, the photo just doesn't do the fall colors justice.  The leaves were more vibrant than it looks)

It was quite a hike climbing the "mountain" wearing a 30 lb toddler stapped to our backs!  Boy, am I sure glad we have an Ergo and Mei Tai to be able to do something like this though.  I couldn't imagine trying to get them to climb up by themselves, and carrying them the whole way just wouldn't have worked.

Sitting by the campfire.
Eating smores- a camping must!  (Sam and Anna's second smores)
It was a wee bit chilly.

Peek!
And peek again!

Sam and Anna really liked using Grandma and Grandpa's camper this summer and fall!
