FMLA Leave Update

Three days into my not-working current life, it has been interesting (or really NOT interesting, depending on how you look at it, actually). In the summer when I have months off from school, the days pass by quickly because I enjoy the weather, go outside, go for long walks with my dogs, go garage saling, get involved in projects, etc. I can't do any of those things right now. (Granted, I still get bored during the summer too) I've found that I can only do one thing around the house right now (put in a load of laundry, get dressed, etc.) before my hips start hurting and I need to sit down. I'm afraid to start any projects because who knows what tomorrow will bring? One of these days tomorrow will bring babies and a whole new life without time for finishing projects!

I've also discovered that things don't just get increasingly more difficult each week, but exponentially worse. Week 35 is exponentially worse than week 34. I don't know HOW I worked last week. I thought this week would be like spring break- sleeping in, being well rested, relaxing, no more swollen feet because I wouldn't be standing all day... WRONG. I'm still in a lot of pain all the time that makes it very difficult to sleep, walk, move or sit. I am forever thankful that I was blessed to be able to experience pregnancy and I wouldn't give away the last 8-9 months for anything. But my body is getting close to done. I would love to go back a few months and stay that stage of pregnant forever. But this is hard. I don't think you can truly comprehend how hard unless you've been pregnant with twins in the third trimester. To try and put it in perspective, I've measured over full term for almost two months. If you've been pregnant before- think how you felt right before you delivered. That's how I've felt since the end of December.

I'm also spending a lot of time on the couch, because that is less painful than moving around. That means I'm spending more time on the computer... which can be a little dangerous for my bank account! On etsy I found the cutest things for my babies: I got two shirts that say "I was worth the wait" from FuzzyBabyDesigns after seeing something similar on my friend's blog.

And I got these from PickySticky on etsy, after seeing them on someone's blog too (I can't remember who!):

They are stickers you apply right to the onesie each month for pictures, up through the first year. I think they will be just adorable and make it easier to take pictures with two squirming babies without needing a piece of paper to try to position too.

In other less cheery news... after talking with the person in charge of FMLA and paychecks at my district, it does not look good that I will be able to stay out for the rest of the school year. My husband and I have yet to finalize our decision- but I think I will have to go back in mid May and work 3 weeks until the end of the school year. I'd have 12 total weeks off, but unless these babies come tomorrow, less than 12 weeks with them. I think it stinks and it makes me want to cry, but I think it will be the way things end up happening. My husband would use some of his leave during that time to stay home and take care of our little ones (my MIL volunteered to stay during that time and help out) so we wouldn't need daycare- but still. It royally stinks. I will update when the final decision is made.

I love those onsie ideas! Too cute. So sorry that the FMLA thing doesn't seem to be going the way you need it too. Glad they won't have to be in daycare, but still a bigtime bummer!

The onesies are adorable :) Love the idea of stickers!

I know that Oregon has a separate FMLA aside from federal, I thought most states did... I did find this for Wisconsin:

Would you qualify? It would at least give you a few more weeks....

And believe me, I know what you are feeling. Just because we aren't working doesn't mean it gets any better! Thank goodness for the internet... and cable TV ;)

So I'll be sending you the bill for the PickyStickys I just bought for myself! Etsy is so addicting! Hope you can figure out the FMLA - what a hassle to deal with on top of all that must go along with preparing for twins. Good luck :) Hopefully it will all work out perfectly in the end.

How does your district do its FMLA and sick leave days? When I had my son (which was at the beginning of December in 2006) I had 12 weeks of paid FMLA time and then they started my sick days from that date so it actually spread my paycheck from December to August. I wasn't going back at all so I took all of the sick days that I had built up so it gave me more paid leave. How does your district figure it out?

I get 12 weeks of UNPAID FMLA. I have 7 weeks of sick leave that I am using. I am currently going to use 4 weeks of unpaid FMLA and I get a bonus week off for spring break. I COULD take an additional unpaid 3 weeks of FMLA to get to the end of the school year- but with already taking 4 unpaid, I don't think we can swing 7 total unpaid weeks. I am a teacher (which have sadly small paychecks) and my husband is a editor for a magazine (and he makes even less than me) Knowing that paying for daycare for two newborns is on the horizon in September, 2x the diapers and 2x the other expenses, 3 more unpaid weeks on top of the 4 unpaid weeks doesn't seem logically feasible for us. Over the past 4 years we spent over $26,000 dollars getting to this point- our savings cushion is pitifully small compared to where I'd like it to be.

I just sent in my paperwork for the FMLA...I'm a little worried because they called me and wanted to "talk" about my application. Oh boy...we'll see what that means. I only have about 5 1/2 weeks of sick leave that I'm using...so that's great that you have 7!

We get out of school on June 15...so we go even longer than you all!! And actually we may go EVEN LONGER if all these snow days don't get pardoned! I think I'm going to try to go back June 1st but hubby still has to work and so I'm not sure who's going to be watching the little ones during that time. That's great that your hubby can take off!

I hear ya about the $$$$$...gotta love teacher pay! If I don't go back at all at the end of the year then my summer pay won't start until mid-July...and we definitely can't swing that!! *sigh* We just need to win the lottery I think. :o)

Love all the cuteness you're finding...the stickers are such a great idea!! And you could stick them on any outfit you want! Cute cute!!

Hope those hips feel better soon...(yeah...I mean I hope babies start arriving...SOON!!) :o) They are good and cooked...come on out little ones!! :o)

That STINKS!!! I wish I lived closer. I would most definitely come help you out too! I hope you're able to start getting some rest and feeling better.

Ugg, being full term for two months. Kinda scary.

LOVE the stickers! That's a great idea!

I hear you on the money stuff. We literally have no money set aside, except for our income tax refund which is a little more than a month's take home pay for me. IVF... it's been expensive. If I have to go on bedrest, it's going to be rough. My goal is 34 weeks, or the end of May. Of course, no telling what my body's goal is!

Hope you get some relief, (or babies) soon!

Ahh gotcha on the whole leave thing. I am officially no longer getting a paycheck as of Feb 9 and I have been kinda freaking out about money. I have some in the bank, more in a separate fund that I really don't want to touch. Josh makes barely enough to make ends meet each month for us on his own. Then there's baby expenses. So yeah, I will be out of money by the end of the year unless I am able to win the lottery too. Or figure out how to make money from home. Childcare is so expensive here.

Katie - I just wanted to wish you the very best! You are 36w today and I guess if you go with your OBs offer of 37w then you are almost there! I hope you have a safe L&D! I will be thinking of you all! XOX
