“I prayed for this child and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.”
1 Samuel 1:27
Dear Sam,
My first born child, when I first heard your cry, you changed my life forever. I will never forget the profound moment when the nurse said, "This is your son." and brought you over so I could see you for the first time. Our bond was cemented in the wee hours in the morning on the third night in the hospital when we were the only ones awake, when I marveled in your every feature- the face that I had always waited for, but never knew what it would look like.
Always active in my womb, you continued to live life to the fullest from that moment on. Never tentative about trying something new, you learned how to climb before you can walk. At 10 months you climbed out of an exersaucer and at 11 months you climbed out of a pack and play. The day you climb out of your crib is not far behind! I have visions of lots of skinned knees and band-aids in our future. I hope Anna keeps an eye on you and keeps you mostly out of trouble!
You let your presence be known in other ways too. As a newborn you were so noisy in your sleep that we quickly moved you into your own crib in your room so we all could sleep a little more soundly. During every bottle, you grunt until you decide you've had enough. Once you learned to crawl places, one of your favorite places to go was by any door so you could lay down and kick it with all your might. You love to smack just about anything with your open hands... including Anna's head, which she isn't very fond of you doing.
The ever caring brother, I think you knew in those early days that Anna needed us more because of her more severe case of GERD and became a more easygoing baby. Now that Anna's the independent one, it is definitely your turn to gain our attention! You love to be in the same room with us, and will speed crawl to our side if we get out of your sight. You love to crawl into our laps for cuddles or grab our legs to ask to be picked up, only to wiggle free to be on the move again and then repeat the process all over within seconds.
You really do adore your sister. Your first word was "Anna" and you never get mad at her if she takes a toy from you or gets in your way. Sometimes you want to get in her face because you love her so much- my dear Sam, you need to learn that sometimes Anna just wants to play by herself and that's okay too.
You are mostly an easy going baby, but sure let us know when there's something you want to happen that hasn't yet! You are extremely impatient when you want your bottle or food. Your cries let us know that you wanted it 5 minutes ago and we are already late. You hate being confined to a space (except for sleeping times). Clothes have always been a battle- at first you hated wearing only a diaper, later on, you hate being dressed.
Even as a newborn we would read books to you often. Because of this you've developed a love for books- almost always choosing them over any other toy. You used to get mad when we took a book away from you. Sometimes it is the only thing you will sit still for now. With you in my lap, I can read 10 of our favorites in a row and you hardly move a muscle. This makes the teacher in your momma very happy. But sometimes you are all boy too. You love anything with wheels and love to drive cars, buses or firetrucks all over the carpet.
Happy birthday Samuel Jacob. You keep us on our toes my little boy, and along with your sister you have made our lives more full than I ever thought possible.
